There are connections that need no words. Some are woven in silence, in everyday gestures, in the tenderness of a gift. That is how the bond between Matías and Luisa, our Dominican neighbor, was born—when one day she gave my son his beloved zebra. From that moment on, Matías found in her a very special channel. And he chose the doves as a bridge between his heaven and our earth.
Many of those manifestations are written in The Book of Matías, Next to Me Forever: Symphony of the Beyond, Signs of Eternity, and the Inspiring Life of Matías, where I invite you to discover how such a small child has shown us, time and again, that death does not exist. Today I want to share two of the most recent ones, which Luisa lived as a direct embrace from him.
A few months ago, Luisa was traveling with her husband to visit their son at university in Baltimore. On the busy highway, their car suddenly stalled. Fear gripped them: what to do in the middle of traffic, in that instant of vulnerability? And right then, in that very moment, a dove descended and perched on a nearby post. Nothing else was needed—the calm returned to her heart. She knew that Matías was there, watching over them, transforming anguish into the certainty of companionship. Everything resolved quickly and better than expected.
When the sky opens in wings to remind us that love never leaves 🕊️
The second happened just this past weekend. Luisa had to travel even farther, to Alabama, to accompany her son in a new beginning. Airplanes are not her friends; each flight makes her uneasy. But as she crossed the night sky, among the clouds lit by flashes, a clear figure appeared: the silhouette of a dove drawn between two masses of light. It was impossible not to see it. “That’s a dove, that’s Matías,” her husband said. And once again, Luisa felt that he was with her.
On her last flight back to New York, Luisa encountered yet another sign: from her window, just over the wing of the plane, a dove rested as if traveling with her. It remained there until the city lights appeared, and then it flew away, as if to say: “You are home now, you are safe.”
The doves are the language Matías chose to speak with Luisa. Subtle yet immense signs. Reminders that his energy knows no barriers, that love never breaks, that life is greater than what we can see.
Because Matías is still here. In every sign. In every flight. In every dove that pauses to tell us: “Do not fear, I am still with you.” 🕊️✨
How Signs Are Woven ✨
Signs don’t just appear out of nowhere. They are built from the simple gestures we shared in life. In Luisa’s case, the bond began in a little square near the building. Every morning she would bring one or two bags of corn and scatter them for the doves. Matías would watch, fascinated, until one day Luisa placed a small bag of corn in his hands. Joyfully, he threw it to the doves, and from then on that scene remained engraved in his memory.
That is why, when Matías departed, his way of communicating with Luisa was through doves—because he already knew that was her language with him. They know what we love, what connects us, and from there they express themselves.
Every sign is unique because every bond is unique. And in that mystery lies our gift as well: to open our hearts and discover the language our loved ones have woven with us all along.
