There are objects that seem to wait in silence for their moment — this is the case of Matías’ giraffe. This giraffe came home when my son was only two years old. It wasn’t one of his favorites, nor the one he used the most. It was just there, almost silent, keeping company from a corner.

But after his departure, everything changed.

Matías’ signs were immediate, so visible and constant that there was no room for doubt. And among all of them, the most insistent one came from this giraffe.

A giraffe that seemed asleep began to sound on its own. It played when I resisted getting out of bed while writing his book, and it wouldn’t stop until I did. It played around his special dates: his birthday, the day he went to heaven. It was like a reminder that he is still here, close, accompanying us.

The most incredible thing is that this giraffe has been with us for six years, and we have never changed its batteries. I don’t know if they are infinite, or if the true energy that moves it is Matías himself.

In recent months, its sound has become even more special: when we think of him, when we silently speak to him, the giraffe responds. It is his way of telling us: “I am here, I hear you, you are not alone.”

Because energy never fades, it only transforms. Sometimes it becomes invisible, intangible — yet paradoxically more present than ever.
